The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has ordered the manufacturer of a drug that sells a version of the popular erectile dysfunction medication sildenafil to market its generic version of the popular erectile dysfunction medication Viagra to U. customers.
The order was issued in part on advice from the FDA and is being prepared by one of its attorneys.
“While the FDA's order is not yet available, the FDA has made several significant steps to protect consumers from potentially harmful side effects of sildenafil,” said Acting FDA Commissioner William M. mac Nguyen, in a press release.
Under the order, the maker of Pfizer’s Pfizer-owned Viagra will begin selling the generic version of the drug, which is not currently approved for use in the U. S., at a low price. The company is also working with U. pharmacies to ensure that consumers have a better understanding of the cost and risks associated with the drug.
“We urge the U. Food and Drug Administration to follow its own regulations and guidelines,” said FDA Commissioner Robert Dole in the release. “This matter is currently being considered by the agency in its ongoing effort to ensure that these generic sildenafil drugs remain available to all consumers.”
The order is being administered by the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, led by the Office of Generic Drugs.
A generic version of the popular erectile dysfunction medication Viagra is available at a generic price of $25 per month, with a free, 30-day supply of 50 milligrams of the drug. “We believe that the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil are of utmost importance,” said Dole in the release. “We are currently conducting several studies to better understand the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil. We look forward to the final disposition of this matter.”
The hearing was the final step in the agency's effort to address the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil.
